An Ornithopter is an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings. Designers seek to imitate the flapping-wing flight of birds, bats, and insects. Though machines may differ in form, they are usually built on the same scale as these flying creatures. Over the years, inventors have tried to perfect the Ornithopter.
Magic deck brewers have also tried to perfect decks with the Ornithopter. There have been twelve printings of this silly little artifact over the years. At first glance,Ornithopter seems like a very unsuspecting creature. But with just one tap of a swamp, and an Unholy Strength, you have a 2/3 flying creature on turn 1. This was one of my earliest strategies in my Magic career and many rivals fell to the boosted Ornithopter.
Ornithopter, at first not more than a joke, quickly become a staple in some versions of the combo decks Fruity Pebbles and Coco Pebbles in 1999. It’s zero casting cost making it easily cast for infinite sacrifices and recursion.
Eventually it settled in as a staple for Affinity decks. Played on first turn with a Spring Leaf Drum and land, two mana can be gained which leads into more creatures or even a Cranial Plating. With equipment attached or Signal Pest on his side Ornithopter can drop some vicious beats when the need arises.
Nice work you goofy little 0/2 creature. You were born an underdog and now you have become a champion and I can’t wait to see what kinds of chaos your children the Thopter tokens will cause in the upcoming days!
